Optimism and pessimism in strategic interactions under ignorance

چکیده
We study players interacting under the veil of ignorance, who have -- coarse beliefs represented as subsets opponents' actions. analyze when these follow $\max \min$ or $\max\max$ decision criteria, which we identify with pessimistic optimistic attitudes, respectively. Explicitly formalizing attitudes and how reason interactively characterize behavioral implications related to common belief in events: while optimism is Point Rationalizability, a new algorithm Wald Rationalizability captures pessimism. Our characterizations allow us uncover novel results: ($i$) regarding optimism, relate it wishful thinking \'a la Yildiz (2007) prove that dropping (implicit) "belief-implies-truth" assumption reverses an existence failure described therein; ($ii$) shed light on notion rationality ordinal games; ($iii$) clarify conceptual underpinnings behind discontinuity hinted analysis Weinstein (2016).

The Evolutionary Stability of Optimism, Pessimism and Complete Ignorance
We provide an evolutionary foundation to evidence that in some situations humans maintain optimistic or pessimistic attitudes towards uncertainty and are ignorant to relevant aspects of the environment. Players in strategic games face Knightian uncertainty about opponents’ actions and maximize individually their Choquet expected utility. Our Choquet expected utility model allows for both an opt...
متن کاملOptimism, pessimism, and mortality.
ings quite a remarkable finding: that the new Optimism-Pessimism scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) predicts no less a dependent variable than death itself. The finding is unusually important for 2 reasons: First, the obvious one is predicting a “hard” measure like mortality from a “mere” paper-andpencil psychological construct. The second is more subtle, and it com...
متن کاملOptimism and pessimism in trust
Artificial agents do not exist in the world in solitude. They are required to interact with others, and thus must reason in some fashion about those they interact with. This paper presents a view of trust which artificial agents can use to help in such reasoning processes, providing them with a means to judge possible future behaviour on the basis of past experience. The paper discusses the not...
متن کاملOptimism and Pessimism in Games
This paper considers the impact of ambiguity in strategic situations. It extends the existing literature on games with ambiguity-averse players by allowing for optimistic responses to ambiguity. We use the CEU model of ambiguity with a class of capacities introduced by Jaffray and Philippe (1997), which allows us to distinguish ambiguity from ambiguity-attitude, and propose a new solution conce...
متن کاملOptimism and Pessimism with Expected Utility∗
Savage (1954) provided axioms on preferences over acts that were equivalent to the existence of an expected utility representation. We show that there is a continuum of other “expected utility” representations in which for any act, the probability distribution over states depends on the corresponding outcomes. We suggest that optimism and pessimism can be captured by the stake-dependent probabi...
